Spectrum-style retrogames

quote [A popular fashion in indie gaming is the graphical style of the Sinclair Spectrum computer (enormously popular in the UK in the early 1980s and sold in the US as the Timex Sinclair), whose peculiar limitations forced a certain discipline on programmers and artists. Jonathan Whiting's Stalwart, out this week, has all the qualities of a Spectrum classic: twitchy, near-impossible gameplay, clashing bright-on-black colors, and a pounding chippy soundtrack. For a less frenetic (and less frustrating) experience with the same aesthetic, try Locomalito's L'Abbaye des Morts, a platformer with a delicious historical twist].

True Reverse Perspective

quote [The scene was modelled and rendered in a camera-hacked version of AoI, Peter Eastman's open source, java-based 3D package. In Reverse Perspective the expected visual rules are inverted, so close objects are small and far objects are big. This is not only true for whole objects, but their structure as well. So the near points of an object are closer together, relative to its far points, which gives the flared-out look of the buildings, and the scene as a whole... (read more)].
