Managing Madness

Read the new Shaping In Action piece by Thought Collage winner, Sara Zucker, about juggling it all and staying sane.

Legal Ego

Every 3 years I am required to complete 45 hours of continuing legal education in order to keep my law license active. Luckily for my agoraphobic self, these hours can be completed via webinars. Lorraine found a bundle on-line that we are trying to get through before the end of the year in order to meet our deadline.

A lot of these CLEs  are really going to be applicable  and useful to my small business practice.

Oh well, I guess it won't hurt to broaden my horizons.

One of the first webinars I watched was called Legal Aspects of Blogging presented by Ronald Coleman, an attorney blogger and legal counsel for the Media Bloggers Association (whatever that is).

He spent the first 10 minutes or so explaining what a blog is and explaining how great his blog is and explaining how everyone else's blog pretty much sucks ass. Yuk-- Attitudes like that are the reason I despise most attorneys and refused to go to my 15 year  law school reunion last month. I explained to Lorraine that most of those people were all a bunch of arrogant twats back in law school and  I can't imagine what supreme douche bags they are after practicing law for 15 years. And don't even get me started on our local bar association meetings.

Back to the webinar: Here is what Mr. Coleman had to say about bloggers (these are direct quotes).

"The vast majority of blogs, blogging and bloggers are of no interest to anyone."

"Most blogs don't deserve to be read. Most people are not good writers and don't necessarily have something to say"

and then he went on to say that most blogs "stink" and most bloggers are "unremarkable" and the only reason that anyone reads a blog is because they have a blog and they are part of a "mutual admiration society." HA! Has he ever been to a bar association meeting???

Typical lawyer. I  think his point was that most blogs are not read by very many people. However, he could not resist the urge to inflate his own ego in making the point. He also mentioned (at least three times) that his blog is one of the ABA top 100 blogs. In fact he started the hour long session with that point and ended it with that point.

If I could do it all over, I would be a florist.

Why didn't I think of that!

Seriously, this is hilarious. I wish it was my blog.

I am totally moving in with Gary and Elaine!!!

In other news, I got off my lazy ass and created a work blog (but I don't want to cross reference it because I don't think any of my clients need to know about my views on polygamy, marijuana laws, wine consumption or all about my thrift store addiction--- Not that any amateur sleuth or my creeper sister-in-law couldn't figure it out if they really wanted-- I just don't need to let it all hang out). I already have a website, but I thought I would go with a work blog as well. Keep me focused.  Actually that is what "LexLociLori" was supposed to be about-- local legal issues, but, uh-- that is not what happened. Ha! Sue me.

Speaking of thrift addictions, this is what happened to me yesterday at the FIRC.

WHY? WHY? WHY?

I used to be embarrassed about how often I went and then I eventually surrendered to it and now I am treated like royalty and given unadvertised "discounts."

BTW, the FIRC is pronounced like one word-- (say "furk"). When I leave the house, Matt likes to say, "Just come straight back, no FIRCing around."

When I was leaving, I spotted these dread-locked kids heading into the FIRC.  Too late hippies, I got all the good stuff!  I was actually trying to take a picture of the sign outside, but these two were more interesting. I normally don't stalk people outside the FIRC. Promise.

Well, when all was said and done, I had FIRCed up this mess.

Did you notice the book? I think that is about the fifth book from that genre that I have purchased of late.

It is as if I think I can read my way skinny.

We now return to our regularly scheduled programming

This post is best enjoyed with the sound of a buzzing vuvuzela.

You know I work from home and rarely have to leave Loriville, right? Well duty called and I had to venture over to the next county for a mediation. What does that mean? It means that I had to get out of my "yoga" gear and put on a dress and some lipgloss.

Destination? Park County. Yes, the very South Park that you know and love.

It is just one mountain pass away-- but the pass is literally one switchback after the other all the way. On my way home I was behind Grampy and Granny Pokeyass, who were driving about 6 miles an hour.

I spot a herd of deer ahead and since I am driving so dang slow,  I get my camera out of my purse (which was sitting right next to me. I did not leave my seat I promise).

By the time I got close, this was the only shot I could get.

The view is spectacular.

Oh, look. This is a windy road. I probably should not be taking pictures.

Wait, let me just get a shot of myself.

That is when things went downhill (get it downhill? I crack myself up).

Look out ahead.

I was on the road, I swear.

Hey, I think this is kind of fun.

When I got home, I put on some regular clothes and Matt and I went to try out a Mexican restaurant we had never been to. They had the biggest freakin plates that I had ever seen. This is not an optical illusion.

PS. The mediation was no bueno. Nothing resolved.

Those Yahoo Guys are Good

 My  real horoscope from yesterday:

Put down the legal pad and relax that furrow in your brow. The 'new you' needs to do more than just make to-do lists. You need to do some shopping -- for clothes, cosmetics and anything else that will help you make your point. After all, if you're working on inner change and you want the world to see your progress, there's only one way to do it: Make equally stunning outer changes.

Yes, that was my real horoscope yesterday right on my Yahoo home page.

Let's dissect shall we:

1. Put down the legal pad.  Uh-- big CHECK on that one.  Sure,  I am an attorney and I have oodles of legal pads and real work to do, but that did not stop me from wasting several hours yesterday trying to figure out the intricacies of this whole blogging thing. Yes, that  included a very important 45 minute conference call with Lorraine on the subject matter.

2.  Relax that furrow in your brow.

Enough said about that. I cant even hide my
furrow with a big ol' smile!

3.  The new 'you' needs to do some shopping  . . . for anything that will help you make your point.  PERFECT.  I often try to prove points through my purchases.  I usually come home from the grocery store and hand Matt a bag and ask him to rummage through it and try to guess how I am feeling.  He is super understanding about stuff like that.

4. If you are working on inner change . . .  Clearly, Yahoo is spying on me through my webcam.-- or maybe they just read my inner change post here. Either way, that  is just creepy.

5.  you want the world to see your progress. HELL YES I want the world to see my progress,  that is why I am blogging.  A reader from Malaysia stopped by my site the other day. WooHoo  --  Look at ME World!

And FINALLY the last bit of advice/guidance . . .

6. Make equally stunning outer changes. Obviously YAHOO is trying to tell me that I am off to a good start with my new fake pink nails as featured here .  Maybe I should get a tattoo???

I don't normally follow my horoscope, but this one just jumped out at me.  I felt like it was speaking to the new blog-tacular me.

On a serious note, I am having  fun with this whole blog thing.  Don't get me wrong. I want to be deep and introspective and reflective and all that and maybe I will be sometimes.  I am just not sure if that is my style. I had initially imagined writing about the law and politics in my little county-- but I started this blog almost 5 years ago and had only blogged 6 times so I guess that wasn't really a passion for me. So I decided that  I am just going to write about whatever strikes me and  I will see how and where it goes.

Ciao for now my friends!

PS: I am not sure why my signature jumped up there, but I don't want to try to figure that out.

Logo

I  decided that my little law firm needs a new logo. After 5 years,  I want a new look for my website, letterhead, cards, etc.  I started a contest on Hatchwise.com where pro graphic designers compete for your business.  There have been 15 entries so far, but the contest runs for 8 more days. I cant wait to pick a winner and get moving. If you have a small business and need a logo, website, etc, you can host your own contest at Hatchwise (formerly elogo contest).
